The way in which the new cloud storage systems is affecting sales of hard drives is a very topical issue. Much to be storm clouds on the horizon of this kind of device, to this day remain the most practical way to carry large amounts of files from one side to another.

The sector of portable hard drives has more variety than appears at first sight. In Engadget, we have made a selection of five of these peripherals for five different needs.

The first hard drive of our selection is also the last to come out to the market, and draws attention to its extreme thinness. Seagate has succeeded in keeping the Seagate GoFlex Slim casing only 124 × 78 × 9 mm, just a little more than measured its internal unity, a 320 GB 7,200 Rpmdisk.

Added to the extreme thinness is the advantage of higher speed USB 3.0 connection. The biggest problem that can have this hard drive is cooling. In principle, the anodized aluminum enclosure should dissipate heat well, but we reserve opinion until further testing.

Although not far from the model of Seagate regarding thinness (73 × 118 × 12 mm), the main virtue of the new Kingston HyperX Max 3.0 resides in the speed of transfer. The company has combined internal drives SSD with USB 3.0 connections. The result is a few disks able to move a 10 GB file in just over a minute. Transfer speeds are around the 195MBps in reading and the 160MBps in writing.

Available in 64, 128, and 256 GB, the biggest problem of the hyperx Max is its price, as part of the 193 euros. The speed, in this case, passes through a toll highway.

While we wait for that new connections Thunderbolt developed by Apple and Intel will be implemented in units to carry, the best alternative of connection for Apple computer users remains the Firewire 800. Our choice in this case comes from the hand of Western Digital and its My Passport Firewire series.

Available in capacities of 320, 500 and 640 GB, the housing of these discs measured 124 × 83 × 18.5 mm and also includes USB 2.0 connection if there is to connect to a PC. The mypassport firewire come pre-formatted for Mac and have a small LCD screen to check the free space without having to connect it.

LaCie continues to reign in what units crushproof refers to your lacie rugged, a classic unity in the sector that was recently updated to the USB 3.0connection. Equipped with, in its interior, with drives at 7,200 RPM, this hard drive for adventurers and workers requiring Hardy equipment reach transfer speeds of up 110MBps.

LaCie Rugged USB 3.0

Although thicker than the other models, the LaCie Rugged USB 3.0 holds waterfalls up to 2.2 meters and is available in 500 GB, 750 GB and 1TBversions.

Unless we go to desktop external drives, it is quite difficult to find Pocket units that offer capabilities over 1TB. That has convinced us most in this regard is the Iomega Prestige USB 3.0, a family of hard drives that has renewed its design recently, also incorporating USB 3.0connections.

The more spacious device in this series reaches the 1.5TB of capacity, a figure anything significant considering their size. This fifth device closes our selection of hard drives to carry, but we are aware that we have left many in the dark. Do you what añadiríais?
